Our 5 tips for the September Reset

As Featured in Marie Claire Magazine

September is a fresh start, in fact for some people it's the real 'new year'. The back to school energy lingers into adulthood - at Yinteriors we love a new notebook and the smell of autumn in the air!

1. Pause for reflection

September marks a shift from Fire to Earth energy in feng shui – a move from the busyness of high summer to a quieter, more grounded late-summer vibe. Before diving into new goals, take a moment to reflect on your progress so far this year. Clear out physical and mental clutter. Recycle old notebooks, tidy your workspace, and finish off (or close the loop on) half-started projects. From an energy perspective, completion clears the path for new ideas and opportunities to flow in.

2. Don’t store what you didn’t use

Hanging onto unworn summer clothes, or that picnic set you’ve been meaning to use for the last three years? Let them go. In feng shui, everything you own holds energy and keeping things “just in case” keeps you tied to the past, and to out-of-date versions of yourself (like the one who loves picnics, when you know you really don’t). Create space now for who you really are and what you really want and you’ll be inviting fresh opportunities before the year is out.

3. Store summer properly - future you will thank you

If you are storing summer items, remember that just because it’s out of sight doesn’t mean it doesn’t count. In feng shui, clutter behind closed doors, like cupboards, lofts, and garages, still affects how your home feels and functions. Take the time to pack away summer items thoughtfully. A bit of care now stops next year’s seasonal switch from turning into a frantic search for the BBQ tongs. This top tip is featured in Marie Claire online.

4. Rethink your family clutter zones

Sentimental things like kids’ artwork can build up fast. Keep what you love, store it neatly in a portfolio, and let the rest go. The same applies to other sentimental items – honour what really matters, and find a respectful way to release the rest. A tree doesn’t try to hang on to its leaves. Take a cue from nature and let things go with good grace.

5. Invite in autumn energy… subtly

Now is the perfect time to refresh your space. Moving your furniture around, sweeping your front step, choosing a new (natural) scent for your home, or buying new bedlinen are small but powerful resets that help ease the transition to spending more time indoors. Want to bring in autumnal vibes? Skip the pumpkins and try earthy tones like ochre, terracotta and warm browns – these bring soothing Earth energy without shouting “seasonal decor.”
